Water Island is the smallest and most recent addition to the U.S. Virgin Islands. The 491.5-acre island has a population of less than 500, and is the best choice for those who are truly looking to relax and get away from modern civilization. To get to Water Island, you will need to fly to St. Thomas, and then take a ferry, which operates daily from Crown Bay Marina on St. Thomas. There are also provision services that allow you to prepare a shopping list from home, and the items will be waiting for you when you arrive on Water Island. There are no taxis, rental car companies or public transportation on Water Island, so transportation options include golf carts, cars or walking. There is no car ferry to Water Island. Hitchhiking is an accepted and generally safe form of transportation. Keep in mind, there are no gas stations on the island. Water Island does offer several historical sites that can be taken in while hiking or taking a bike tour. Visit Fort Segarra, an underground fort that served as part of the U.S.'s defense during World War II. The fort was designed to protect a St. Thomas submarine base; however, the war ended before the fort was completed. The site is now open for viewing, and visitors can tour tunnels and underground rooms. The fort's observation deck boasts a breathtaking view of Water Island and other nearby islands. Water Island's plantation ruins are unique, because the island was owned by free black men, who operated plantations there. You can visit Carolina Point Plantation, which is well-preserved, to observe the plantation's remaining foundations, and slave cabins, among other features. Other daytime activities include guided bike tours of Water Island, hiking, relaxing at the beach with a picnic lunch and snorkeling. The island's most popular beach is Honeymoon Beach, which often has gentle to no surf, a gentle slope and soft white sand, making it great for children. Water Island's nightlife is an extension of the island's quiet, laid-back atmosphere. There are some restaurants that serve lunch and dinner, and the island features some unique mobile vendors as well. There are no night clubs on Water Island, but there are a few open-air bars that allow you to enjoy the outdoors while socializing. The island's casual atmosphere does not require fancy clothing. You will fit right in wearing shorts, t-shirts, tank tops and sandals. There is not much shopping to speak of on Water Island, but if you must return home with souvenirs, you can find something on the island. For more selection, try a day trip to St. Thomas, which boasts shops featuring great duty-free prices in items such as jewelry and perfume. A Water Island vacation is not for everyone. If you are truly looking to get away from it all and spend your days simply relaxing on the beach reading a book, come on down and enjoy your stay! |
